This Day That Age
Pope Pius XII, in his Easter message on April 10, called on statesmen of the East and the West to make a sincere effort to reach "lasting understanding" and agree on progressive disarmament to spare humanity the destruction of a new war. He exhorted scientists to develop atomic energy for peaceful purposes and to exploit the numerous types of radiation to help solve the world's food problem. Half a million people, including pilgrims from all over the world, wildly acclaimed the Pope when he appeared on a balcony high above them to make his address. The 79-year-old Pontiff spoke into two silver microphones from the balcony on the façade of the Basilica of St. Peter. His speech was broadcast by Vatican Radio and relayed by 17 national networks.
