dated April 12, 1955: Tributes to M.S.

Felicitating Smt. M.S. Subbulakshmi who has been awarded Padma Bhushan, the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court, Mr. M.C. Chagla, recalled at a function held at Matunga in Bombay on April 10 the services rendered by her in the cause of Indian art and culture. He endorsed Prime Minister Nehru's description of her as "the Queen of Music." Interpretation of South Indian art to the North and thus making the people realise the oneness of art had been one of the great achievements of Smt. Subbulakshmi. Referring to the award, Mr. Chagla said: "Though the Constitution of India discarded all titles as they were against the spirit of equality and removal of distinction of class, caste and sex, conferment of titles on artistes like Smt. Subbulakshmi had been placed on an entirely different footing. It had been done by popular wish and the award carried the full acceptance of the public as a whole. She is not just an artiste and devotee but a great humanitarian in making her art the instrument of relieving the distress of the people. She responds graciously whenever there is a call for raising funds for public institutions. Artistes usually live in ivory towers unmindful of the sufferings around them. But Smt. Subbulakshmi, who could not stand suffering of any sort, has dedicated herself to the removal of all suffering. Her services in this direction could only be compared to the work of Meerabai. Indeed she is the Meerabai of the South. In her religious, cultural and artistic achievements she is in fact the present-day Meera."
