Strike hits normal life in Manipur

By Iboyaima Laithangbam

IMPHAL, APRIL 11. Normal life in Manipur was hit today owing to the week-long strike called by the Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP) from Sunday in support of the ongoing agitation for restoration of the Manipuri script which had been replaced by Bengali in the 18th century along with the spread of Vaishnavism.

The KCP had set midnight of Saturday as the deadline for resolution of the issue. It called the strike after the Government failed to come to an agreement with the Meitei Eyek Erol Loiashinba Apunba Lup (MEELAL). However, a faction of the KCP today clarified that it was not associated with the strike.

The insurgents today reiterated that those who violated the strike restrictions would be shot dead. Employees of the Water Supply and Health Departments and mediapersons are, however, exempt. Most Government offices were either closed or had low attendance. Most employees of the exempted departments could not go to work as all public transport was off the roads.
