Nod for five hi-tech weaving parks

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI, APRIL 11. The Union Textiles Ministry has cleared the setting up of hi-tech parks exclusively for the weaving sector — three in Tamil Nadu, and one each in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. The projects would cost Rs. 78 crores, with the Centre contributing Rs. 39 crores.

In Tamil Nadu, the new parks would come up at Andipatti, Palladam and Kumarapalayam, while in Andhra Pradesh it will come up at Kothur near Hyderabad and in Karnataka at Bagalkot. They would be ready for commissioning over the next one year.

The hi-tech park near Hyderabad would be the largest. Costing Rs. 28 crores, it would have 50 worksheds and provide for 576 shuttleless looms, 168 semi-automatic and 80 automatic looms. The smallest park would be at Bagalkot. It would cost Rs. 2.4 crores and have six worksheds and provide for 144 automatic looms.

The park at Andipatti would cost Rs. 17 crores. It would have 100 worksheds and four sizing centres and provide for 600 shuttleless looms. The park at Palladam would cost Rs. 16 crores, have 88 worksheds and provide for 633 shuttleless looms. The Kumarapalayam park would cost Rs. 14 crores, have 57 worksheds and provide for 547 shuttleless looms.

Senior officials in the Ministry said the Bagalkot and Andipatti parks were likely to be commissioned in August followed by the Kumarapalayam park in October, Palladam park in February next year and Hyderabad park in June next.

The parks were the first cleared under the `hi-tech weaving parks scheme' launched last year as a combination of the three on-going schemes of the Textile Centre Infrastructure Development Scheme, Group Workshed Scheme and Technology Upgradation Fund Scheme as part of an exercise to give a boost to the decentralised powerloom sector.
