NEW DELHI, APRIL 11. The Union Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation is modernising the statistical system with World Bank support. The programme, `Modernisation of statistical system in India' is already in progress under which the sub-project implementation plan for Tier-1 of the main project is in progress. The Department of Economic Affairs has cleared the sub-project as an economic reforms programme. Tier-1 of the project, according to an official statement here, includes several components such as establishment of an all-India statistical network; strengthening of the state statistical system, study of business register; study on service sector statistics and study of assessing the survey capabilities of the private sector. The implementation of the sub-project has also been initiated. The action on engaging agencies for conducting study of various components of Tier-1 has also begun, as scheduled. Contracts for each of the component, except for the study on the establishment of the all-India statistical network, are likely to be finalised soon. However, all studies relating to Tier-1 project are poised for completion as programmed.
