Gagan Narang finishes sixth

CHANGWON (KOREA), APRIL 11. Gagan Narang finished a creditable sixth in men's air rifle in the shooting World Cup here. The Hyderabad lad had the third best total in the final as an all-10 sequence helped him log 104.0 points. However, Gagan's qualification total of 595 out of 600 put paid to his medal hopes.

Gagan had a series of 10.5, 10.5, 10.4, 10.4, 10.7, 10.9, 10.1, 10.2, 10.3, 10.0 in the final and a series of 98, 100, 98, 100, 100 and 99 in the qualification series.

Olympic finalist Abhinav Bindra finished 14th with a 593 following rounds of 99, 96, 100, 98, 100 and 100 while Manoj Kumar was 28th with a 589 following rounds of 97, 99, 99, 97, 97 and 100.

World champion Jason Parker of the U.S. won the gold as he equalled the world record of 702.7 despite a 598 in the qualifying series.

In the absence of Anjali Vedpathak Bhagwat and Suma Shirur, the Indian shooters were unable to make an impact in the women's air rifle event that was won by Zhao Yinghui of China, who shot a World record equalling 400 out of 400 on way to booking an Olympic quota place for the Beijing Games. Deepali Deshpande finished 33rd with a 390 following rounds of 99, 98, 98 and 95 while Meena Kumari was 38th with a 388 with rounds of 96, 98, 97 and 97.

In men's free pistol, Vivek Singh was 19th with a 551 while Samaresh Jung was 28th with a 543. In women's sport pistol, Sushma Rana was 15th with a 576 while Shweta Chaudhry was 26th with a 563.
