MOSCOW:, A former KGB General was shot dead here in an apparent contract hit. Colonel General Anatoly Trofimov (65) was shot in the head and chest on Sunday night by a masked assassin near his apartment house. His wife Tatiana (28) was also shot and died later in hospital. Their four-year-old daughter escaped unharmed. Col.-Gen. Trofimov was a deputy head of the Federal Security Service (FSB), successor to the KGB, and the FSB chief in Moscow during the rule of the former President, Boris Yeltsin. He is the senior-most security official to have been killed in Russia. Investigators believe the murder could be linked to his business activities. He was reportedly involved with many private security firms set up by retired KGB officers, one of which is headed by his son, Boris.
