BANGALORE, APRIL 11. The 30-year-old halfway home for the mentally ill, run by the Medical Pastoral Association (MPA), is facing the threat of closure, and the association members have made an appeal for public contributions. Mohan Isaac, president of MPA, said the home, which has helped rehabilitate over 10,000 persons who are mentally ill, has received notice from the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) informing it that the lease period of the land which it is using has ended and it will have to purchase the land for Rs. 2.5 crores to continue to use it. The MPA, which has to pay the amount by May 15, has been able to raise only Rs. 1 crore. "We are appealing to the citizens of the city to come forward and help us continue our work," Dr. Isaac said at a press conference here today. Besides the halfway home, the MPA runs a hostel and a long-term care facility for the mentally ill. The halfway home accommodates 21 persons and provides counselling and behaviour modification therapy at a monthly fee of Rs. 5,500. Navajeevan Hostel helps those who need extended support to renew their work or learning skills. The monthly fee for the day care facility is Rs. 2,400. The MPA, which has a long-term care unit to support and rehabilitate the mentally ill, runs "Sahai," a suicide prevention helpline. Individuals who wish to contribute to the MPA's cause may contact the association at 47, Pottery Road, Fraser Town (phone: 25477375).
