CHIKMAGALUR, APRIL 11. The Minister for Information, B. Shivaram, said here today that shops will be opened in all taluk headquarters to market products produced by women self-help groups. Inaugurating a convention organised in connection with International Women's Day, Mr. Shivaram said the Stree Shakti scheme, which was started by the Government in 2001-02, has emerged as a major force in the State with the groups' savings totalling Rs. 250 crores. He said the Government is giving an incentive of Rs. 5,000 to each group, in addition to a subsidy of Rs. 10,000 under the Swarna Jayanti Rozgar scheme. The Union Government is also providing loans through banks to self-help groups, he said. Noting that the Government has approached the Reserve Bank of India to start a "Stree Shakti bank," Mr. Shivaram said the Government also intends to distribute Rs. 731 crores in loans to the groups through banks and corporations. Announcing that a family court will be started in Chikmagalur soon, Philomena Peres, Chairperson of the Karnataka State Women's Commission, stressed the need to prevent atrocities on women. S.L. Dharme Gowda, MLA and president of the Chikmagalur District Central Cooper ative Bank, said Stree Shakti groups are prompt in repaying loans. Motamma, former Minister, inaugurated an exhibition and distributed incentives from the revolving fund to groups that have made the most savings.
