Youth Congress workers told to strengthen party

RAMANALA (DHARWAD DT.), APRIL 11. Ashok Gehlot, former Chief Minister of Rajasthan and General Secretary of the All India Congress Committee, today called upon Youth Congress workers to work for the development of rural areas.

Speaking at the "Ekta Samavesh" organised by the Karnataka Pradesh Youth Congress Committee here, Mr. Gehlot said Gandhiji's principles should be popularised throughout the country.

Youth Congress activists should play an active role in this regard.

Inaugurating the samavesh, the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, said the State Government will continue the "Rajiv Yuva Shakti" programme started by the previous Government and necessary allocation will be made for the purpose.

He also promised that youth will be considered in the appointments to boards and corporations.

Referring to the remarks of Bajrang Dal leaders on Idgah Maidan, Mr. Dharam Singh said the State Government will not allow communal forces to gain the upper hand.

Tickets sought

Sanjay Singh, former Union Minister, urged the Congress to consider Youth Congress leaders while giving tickets to contest the Assembly and Parliament elections.

Ashok Tanwar, President, Indian Youth Congress, spoke about what is needed from the youth in the present scenario. He asked them to be disciplined and put in efforts to strengthen the party.

Mr. Tanwar called upon the workers to involve more number of girls and women in the party work.

The Minister for Transport and Water Resources, M. Mallikarjuna Kharge; the Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs, H.K. Patil; the Minister for Cooperation, R.V. Deshpande; the Minister for Municipal Administration, S.R. Morey; the Chief Whip of the Ruling Party in the Legislative Council, Saleem Ahmed; and the former Minister, D.K. Shivakumar, spoke on the occasion.

The Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee, B. Janardhana Poojary, presided over the function.

Dinesh Gundu Rao, MLA and President of the Karnataka Pradesh Youth Congress Committee, and Nagaraj Chabbi, President, Dharwad Rural District Youth Congress Committee, were present.
