Ombudsmen to monitor zilla panchayats

BANGALORE, APRIL 11. The Government was planning to appoint ombudsmen to monitor the financial and administrative matters of zilla panchayats following the increase in the budgetary allocations to the panchayats, the Minister for Panchayat Raj and Rural Development, H.C. Mahadevappa, has said. He told presspersons here today that the Government was thinking of bringing in legislation to appoint an ombudsman to each zilla panchayat. It would only be a recommendatory body such as the Lokayukta. The Government in its Budget for 2005-06 has allocated Rs. 2,500 crores to the zilla, taluk and gram panchayats. Of the amount, Rs. 800 crores was earmarked for gram panchayats, Rs. 800 crores for zilla panchayats and Rs. 200 crores for taluk panchayats.
