TIRUMALA, APRIL 11. A major accident was averted in the hill temple of Lord Venkateswara at Tirumala today when a fire broke out in the additional kitchen, where laddus were being prepared. According to sources, the thick layers of grease and soot sticking on the walls around the giant ovens caught fire when cooks lit the ovens around 4 p.m. The fire was, however, brought under control by the cooks and other staff using fire extinguishers and wet sacks. It would have been disastrous had the fire spread to the nearby 1,200-kg capacity `ghee tank.' Sources said that there were at least 2,000 pilgrims inside the temple complex when the mishap occurred. But no one was hurt.
