Chandy to lay stone for bridge today

ALAPPUZHA, APRIL 11. The Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, will lay the foundation stone of the bridge across the Kayamkulam Lake connecting Perumpally in the tsunami-hit Arattupuzha panchayat with Kochiyude jetty in the mainland at a function at Kochiyude Jetty at 3 p.m. on April 12.

The Minister for Public Works, M. K. Muneer, will preside over the function. Later, the Leader of the Opposition, V. S. Achuthanandan, will inaugurate a public meeting organised at the venue in connection with the stone-laying.

The Revenue Minister, K. M. Mani, will deliver the keynote address. Those Ministers who would participate in the function include the Agriculture Minister, K. R. Gouri, the Minister for Water Resources, Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, the Tourism Minister, K. C. Venugopal, and the Fisheries Minister, Dominic Presentation.

The MLAs, T. K. Devakumar and M. M. Hassan, the district panchayat president, K. H. Babujan, and the District Collector, K. R. Muraleedharan, will also participate in the function, said an official release.

The bridge would have a length of 297 metres. It would also have a pedestrian way on either side. The bridge would have a height of seven metres from the water level at its middle to facilitate the movement of boats and other vessels through the lake.

The bridge is expected to cost Rs 15 crores. An official release said the Chief Minister had already given administrative sanction for the release of the amount.

The PWD would construct an approach road of 644 m at the Perumpally side of the bridge and an approach road of length 429 m at the mainland. The Government would acquire 1.5 hectares of land for it. According to the official release, Rs 80 lakhs would be spent for acquiring the land.
