Law and order has improved: Mulayam

PHULPUR, APRIL 11 . Claiming that the law and order situation in the State has improved since the Samajwadi Party came to power, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav today said accusations levelled against the regime stemmed from the opposition parties' insecurity over the growing popularity of the party.

``The country today is facing a grave political crisis, with all the major political groups losing their ground one by one. In such a scenario, the growing popularity of Samajwadi Party has naturally made our opponents insecure,'' Mr. Yadav said at a public meeting in Dhosda village here, 40 kms from Allahabad. Mr. Yadav said his regime was making all efforts to convert Uttar Pradesh into ``Uttam Pradesh'' (best State).

He was speaking after distributing cheques for Rs 20,000 each among 3,700 girl students under the State government's `kanyadahan scheme'.

There has been an improvement in the law and order as well as the economic and education scenarios since his government assumed power in the State, Mr. Yadav claimed admitting, however, that there was plenty of room for improvement in all spheres. -- PTI
