MAMC launches new course

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, APRIL 11 . The Mulana Azad Medical College (MAMC) has become the first medical college in the country to launch a postgraduate certificate course in industrial health. The Union Ministry of Labour recently granted permission to the Department of Occupational and Environmental Health to begin the course. Started on April 1, seven doctors are undertaking the programme at present. "Due to the inadequacies in the infrastructure of occupational health in India, the problem is alarming and could undermine the productivity and competitive edge of the country. There is no cure for occupational and environmental diseases,'' said the Dean of MAMC, A.K. Aggarwal, speaking about the programme.

So far there are no regular teaching programmes to train physicians in these concepts in medical schools. "More than earning a degree, the course will enable physicians to acquire skills to identify hazards and prevent diseases due to environmental and occupational exposure for which treatment is only supportive. The programme would be later extended for a year. Also, in order to bring the course at par with the best international standards, MAMC has approached the Collegium Ramazzani to work with the educators at MAMC,'' said Dr. Aggarwal.
