KINNIGOLI, APRIL 11. "Chutuku sahitya'' is like a springboard to main literature, said H. S. Krishnaswamy Iyengar, writer, here on Sunday. He was addressing a gathering after inaugurating the fourth Dakshina Kannada Chutuku Sahitya Sammelan (meet on limericks). Mr. Iyengar said "chutuku sahitya'' should be able to convey more in nutshell and should serve as supplementary to main literature. Quoting a writer, he said, "Languages are many. But literature is one.'' ``Chutuku sahitya'' took birth when human beings began speaking. It (chutuku sahitya) does not mean poetry of four or five lines, he said and added that it covers brief literature. And such literature should be able to express thoughts, ideas and message in a broader context. Mr. Iyengar likened "chutuku sahitya'' to a child who is liked by all. This form of literature is child to main literature, which should ensure the growth of "chutuku sahitya''. The president of meet, Palakala Seetharama Bhat, presided over the inaugural function. Harikrishna Punaroor, former president, Kannada Sahitya Parishat, released a book titled "Chutuku Chilume'', written by Mr. Bhat. K. Bhuvanabhirama Udupa, executive president of the reception committee, welcomed the gathering. In all, 19 persons working in different fields were felicitated: Shyamasundara Nethhara Kere (cartooning), Ha. Ma. Satish (literature), Udayashanakar Neerpaje (publishing), Vi. Su. Bha.
