Expel manager of SC, ST Corporation, demands DSS

By Our Staff Correspondent

MANGALORE, APRIL 11. The Dakshina Kannada unit of the Karnataka Dalit Sangarsha Samithi (DSS) on Monday urged the Government to expel from service the District Manager of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Development Corporation and a second division clerk in the office here against whom the Lokayukta police recently recommended department action.

Addressing presspersons here, the convenor of the unit, P. Keshava, claimed that the Lokayukta police, which raided the office of the corporation on Thursday based on a complaint, found lapses in the release of money to beneficiaries of the Safai Karamchari Rehabilitation Scheme. Mr. Keshava alleged that the two had demanded Rs. 2,000 and Rs. 4,000 as bribe, respectively from the complainant. The corporation had selected the complainant for grant of loan-cum-subsidy of Rs. 15,000 under the scheme. Besides, he claimed, the police had found procedural lapses in the release of financial assistance to beneficiaries.

He claimed that the police submitted a report to the Government in this connection on April 8. If the Government failed to take action in one month, he said, the DSS would lock up the office of the corporation and stage a demonstration.

Mr. Keshava alleged that some officials in the Mangalore City Corporation too were harassing beneficiaries eligible to receive assistance under the 18 per cent programme meant for the development of Dalits. The harassment is in the form of delay in releasing cheques for repair of homes and construction of toilets. This happens even after the committees of the corporation concerned releasing sanction order.

He alleged that the corporation had not released scholarships meant for Dalit students for the academic year 2004-05.

Mr. Keshava said a statue of Ambedkar would be unveiled at Kukkedi in Belthangady taluk on April 24.
