Special Olympics summer games likely in India

By Our Staff Correspondent

NEW DELHI, APRIL 11. The Special Olympics committee has offered to hold the World Summer Games in India in 2011. This issue was discussed during a meeting of a Special Olympics delegation and the Union Sports Minister, Sunil Dutt, here today.

The delegation, led by Timothy P. Shriver, also discussed the minutes of a partnership agreement with the Indian Government as a manifestation of official recognition and support to the movement to reach out to over 30 million intellectually disabled people in the country.

The Special Olympics was founded in 1968 by Eunice Kennedy Shriver, sister of the late American President, John F. Kennedy, as a non-profit international organisation.

The main objectives of the Special Olympics movement are to change societal attitudes and perceptions towards intellectually disabled persons and to integrate them into the mainstream of schools and workplaces.
