Straight contest in Pappapatti, Keeripatti

By Our Staff Reporter

MADURAI, APRIL 11. A keen and interesting contest is on the cards in the Pappapatti and Keeripatti village panchayats of Madurai district, which have two candidates each slugging it out at the hustings for the post of president.

Two candidates, A. Ponnian and S. Mathippu, withdrew their nomination papers on the last day of the withdrawal of nominations today from Pappapatti and Keeripatti respectively. With this P. Periakaruppan and P. Narasinghan backed by the Dalit Panthers of India and V. Azhagumalai and the DPI supported candidate P. Poonkudy are in the fray for the post of the president in Pappapatti and Keeripatti respectively.

In all probability, it would be a straight contest between the DPI-backed candidates and independents supported by the `people' in both the village panchayats. The byelection would be held on April 19.

However, no nomination papers were received for the post of president in Nattarmangalam village panchayat.
