THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, APRIL 11. The body of an aged woman from Madurai, which had been kept at the mortuary of the General Hospital here as the relatives did not have the means to transport it to Madurai, was cremated at the electric crematorium here on Monday after nine days. Rakkamma alias Achamma, 70, had arrived in the city from Madurai along with her grandchildren. She died at the General Hospital on April 2 following an illness. It was through the efforts of the local residents that the children were sent back to their native place to inform other relatives. Though the hospital authorities were willing to release the body, the relatives of Rakkamma did not have the means to transport it to Madurai in a private ambulance. The Corporation's ambulance was also not made available, as it did not perform inter-State service. Later, upon informing the local Shiv Sena unit, an ambulance was made available free. Shiv Sena activists persuaded the family to cremate the body here and made arrangements to have this done free at the electric crematorium.
