By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, APRIL 11. As convocations go, this one promises to be a star studded one. With the Academic Council approving all the proposed names in its last meeting, the list has now been sent to the University Visitor, President A.P.J.Abdul Kalam, for approval. Although there are reports of more names still being in the pipeline for the approval of Vice-Chancellor, Deepak Nayyar, University officials said the first six names were approved unanimously.

This will be the first time that the University will hold a special convocation to confer the honorary doctorate degree on distinguished national personalities from different streams. According to Statute 16 (1) of the University, the honorary doctorate can be conferred on scholars and distinguished personalities who are working in India, people of letters, those who have distinguished themselves in public life, economy or in the domain of social transformation and creative arts can be considered for the degree.

Seen as a man with one of the biggest and unwavering fan following in the country, for Amitabh Bachchan, the convocation will mean a return to the campus that gave him his first major training in acting. A student of Kirori Mal College, Mr. Bachchan was part of the College's theatre group.

Describing him as the most adored icon that Indian cinema has ever produced, the proposal said "Amitabh Bachchan is a household name not only in name but wherever in the world that Hindi cinema is popular... .His depiction of the angry young man caught the imagination of a whole generation of young people. Mr. Bachchan has enormous versatility as an actor and he fits into every mould be it a comic character or a serious one.''
