KOCHI, APRIL 11. Companies, in public and private sectors, will face crisis unless they prepare to face the challenges posed by globalisation, said M.A. Mohammed Ali, Director, Kochi Refineries Limited. He was delivering the inaugural address at the 50th Railway Week celebrations, organised by the Trivandrum Division of Southern Railways, at Chavara Cultural Centre here today. Public sector units must consider their social commitment while adapting themselves to the changed environment, Mr. Ali said. The KRL used to rely a lot on railways for transporting its products, till pipelines were laid to carry them. Even with only 30 per cent of the Kochi-Karur pipeline being active, the transactions with railways had come down considerably.
Aggressive marketing
In his address, G. Narayanan, Divisional Railway Manager, said that many aggressive marketing efforts were taken up in the last financial year. The number of high-capacity parcel vans attached to various trains was increased to 223 as compared to 72 in 2003-'04 . However, there had been a decline in freight traffic, the main products handled in this division being petroleum products and fertilizers. The earning from freight traffic during 2004-'05 was Rs. 84.65 crores whereas it was Rs. 126.93 crores in 2003-'04, Mr. Narayanan said. Twenty-one level-crossings were upgraded as interlocked level crossings during this year as a safety improvement. Electrification in the division was progressing. The Ernakulam-Alleppey-Kayamkulam and Ernakulam-Kottayam sections had already been energised and the remaining sections up to Kollam would soon be energised, he said. Najeeba Mohammed Ali, wife of Mr. Ali, presented the awards for meritorious service. Sujatha Jayaraj, Additional Divisional Railway Manager; V. Rajeevan, Senior Divisional Personnel Officer, and C.S. Prasanna Kumar, divisional secretary of Southern Railway Mazdoor Union, spoke. Members of Southern Railway Employees Sangh organised a protest meeting, raising various demands, in front of the venue.
