VISAKHAPATNAM, APRIL 11. An apartment, save one of its bedrooms, on the Beach Road here was destroyed in a fire on Monday. There were no causalities as a 17-year-old girl and an old lady present in the apartment when the fire broke out, rushed to safety. The Fire Department personnel had a tough time in controlling the fire, as the apartment was located on the sixth floor. Fire tenders were requisitioned from the Peda Gantyada, Marripalem and Port Trust also to control the fire. "We had to use the staircase to reach the apartment, located at 80 feet from the ground level, as we do not have the equipment to fight a fire in high rise buildings," said the Station Fire Officer, Surendranath. The fire broke out in the apartment in Balaji Towers near YMCA, owned by the proprietor of the Gothi Sons, Ashok Gothi. An electrical short circuit in a television set sparked off the fire, around 7.20 p.m. The teenaged girl, watching the TV, switched off the main connection and rushed out of the apartment with the old lady. As the fire spread to the other rooms residents of other apartments also rushed out. The fire fighters laid hose pipes along the staircase and moved into the apartment slowly controlling the fire. It took them nearly one-and-a-half hours to control the fire. The loss was yet to be assessed. The Collector and Special Officer of the Municipal Corporation, Praveen Prakash, the Commissioner of Police, V.S.K. Kaumudi, also rushed to the spot.
