BANGALORE, APRIL 11. For Bangaloreans hard-pressed for parking space, here's a chance to park, shop and be entertained, all at one place. With enough space to park a thousand cars, the city's largest integrated parking complex and "shoppertainment centre," Garuda, was unveiled on Monday by the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh. The complex, located on Magarath Road, will be open to the public by the month-end. Located near M.G. Road, the complex is a unique public-private joint venture project between the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) and Maverick Holdings and Investments Private Limited, a construction and project management company.
Safety of vehicles
Spread over 11 floors and two basements, the parking facility is combined with 2,30,000 sq. ft. of shopping and entertainment space on five floors, including a five-screen multiplex and a 140-room hotel. "The complex offers covered parking for 1,000 cars. The parking ramps and bays have been designed to ensure smooth movement of vehicles and they will be monitored by surveillance cameras and security personnel to ensure safety of the vehicles. The entire mall will be air-conditioned," said an official of Maverick. Addressing presspersons before unveiling the complex, the BMP Commissioner, K. Jothiramalingam, said the citizens of Bangalore could now make use of a new destination to shop, relax and entertain themselves in the heart of the city without having to worry about safe parking. "We envisaged this project to make the best out of an underutilised property," he said.
Parking fee
Although the BMP is yet to finalise the parking fee for its space for 500 cars, a Maverick Holdings official indicated that it will be about Rs. 10 an hour for cars and Rs. 5 an hour for two-wheelers. The complex will have 80 shops including leading international fashion stores Marks & Spencer and Mango, and a jewellery shop, Alukkas. Besides, lifestyle stores Shoppers' Stop and Westside will open large outlets with brands such as United Colours of Benetton, Provogue, Lush, Planet Sports, Levis Strauss, Reebok and Identiti. Garuda's entertainment options will include the INOX multiplex with five screens and 1,350 seats and activity centres for children. "The multiplex will start screening films from May 15. The complex will also offer shoppers a wide range of cuisines at a food court with over 20 food counters. Besides, there will be dining options in five exclusive restaurants serving Oriental, Continental, Mediterranean and Frontier cuisines," Maverick Holdings managing director, Uday Garudachar, said. The hotel, Mr. Garudachar said, will be given to a five-star chain and will be operational by June. The BMP and Maverick Holdings signed the joint venture agreement in 2002 and launched the project in 2003. The project cost about Rs. 90 crores, Mr. Garudachar said.
