HYDERABAD, APRIL 11. The State Government has plans to open up courses in higher education to students from other States. A committee of Vice-Chancellors will study and recommend the modalities soon. The Chairman of Andhra Pradesh State Council of Higher Education (APSCHE), K.C. Reddy, told a press conference that denial of seats to students from other parts of the country in State universities came up for discussion at a meeting of Vice-Chancellors on Monday, which was chaired by the Governor, Sushil Kumar Shinde.

The meeting decided to constitute a committee of four Vice-Chancellors to study and submit a report in a few months. The sentiments of students here and the delicate local and non-local issues would be kept in mind before taking a decision. Prof. Reddy strongly felt that it was in the nation's interests that students from other States be allowed to seek admission in universities here. Whether such seats should be earmarked from the existing quota or should they be treated as supernumerary seats was a subject for discussion and the committee would study it. There was also an option of tying up with other universities for a similar gesture. "The Governor has shown keen interest in the issue," he said. The Governor also suggested a uniform convocation procedure in universities in the State. "The number of honorary doctorates given varied for every university, apart from the conduct of the proceedings," he said, adding that the committee would also suggest necessary changes in this aspect. Prof. Reddy said academic integration of Intermediate into the APSCHE was also favoured at the meeting and steps would soon be taken in that direction. "Though Intermediate Board officials are invited for academic meetings of the APSCHE, efforts are to make it official," he said. The council Vice-Chairman, U. Tataji, and the Secretary, V. Jayarami Reddy, were also present.
