Bhavani water sought for Sathyamangalam

ERODE, APRIL 12. The Sathyamangalam Municipal Chairman urged the Collector to order the release of water from Bhavani river for drinking to Sathyamangalam. Heavy rain has led to a rise in the level of the Lower Bhavani Project Reservoir and the level stood today at 60.55 feet.

Sathyamangalam, Gobichettipalayam and 18 other panchayats are getting Bhavani water. In addition some other Comprehensive water supply schemes are depending on Bhavani water for supply to the residents. Since water into the river from LBP reservoir has been stopped only rainwater along with municipal sewage is flowing. Obviously the municipal authorities are reluctant to pump the contaminated water.

The Sathyamangalam Municipal Chairman, S. A. Saleem urged the Collector to order the release of water from the reservoir into the Bhavani river. Meanwhile due to heavy rain in Anthiyur forest area and its surroundings, inflow into Varattupallam reservoir has increased and 22.50 feet of water is stored in the reservoir against the full level of 33 feet. The district administration feels that because of the comfortable storage in the reservoir, there would be no scarcity in the area, as the water would percolate into the wells and also would be discharged for dry crop cultivation.

Meanwhile the residents of Kamarajnagar, Periya Agraharam said that the rain water had entered their houses due to heavy rain two days back. They said all the 300 and odd families were affected.
