PORT OF SPAINPORT-OF-SPAIN, APRIL 12.APRIL 12. Fast bowler Makhaya Ntini returned the best Test figures by a South African to lead the tourists towards victory on day five of the second Test against West Indies on Tuesday.

Ntini took seven for 37 as West Indies was bowled out for 194 in its second innings with Ramnaresh Sarwan standing firm with an unbeaten 107.

Ntini scooped six for 95 in the first innings, earning him match figures of 13 for 132, his second 10-wicket Test haul.

South Africa, which needs 144 to win, was 45 without loss in its second innings at lunch. A.B. de Villiers batted aggressively for his 31 not out, while Graeme Smith was on seven.

The pitch was showing signs of deterioration but with blue skies overhead, the tourists should complete a comfortable win to take a 1-0 lead in the four-match series after the first Test in Guyana was drawn.

The West Indies resumed on 170 for five but lost its last five wickets for 24.

South Africa took the second new ball immediately in the third over of the day and Ntini struck nine balls later when he had Dwayne Bravo caught behind by wicketkeeper Mark Boucher for 33 to end a sixth-wicket stand of 88 with Sarwan.

Ntini trapped Courtney Browne in front for two in his next over and eight balls later fast bowler Andre Nel made it 189 for eight when he had Daren Powell well caught at second slip by Jacques Kallis for one. Ntini wrapped up the innings by yorking Pedro Collins and Reon King, both without scoring.

The only other South African to claim 13 wickets in a Test was off-spinner Hugh Tayfield, who took 13 for 165 against Australia in Melbourne in 1952-53, and 13 for 192 against England in Johannesburg in 1956-57.
