New political party formed in Assam

By Our Special Correspondent

KOKRAJHAR, APRIL 12. A new regional political party of Assam— Bodoland People's Progressive Front (BPPF) — was formed here today after a day-long convention of frontal Bodo and non-Bodo organisations and former militants of the erstwhile Bodo Liberation Tigers (BLT).

The party, the second largest in the State after the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), has been formed at the behest of the influential All-Bodo Students Union (ABSU) with an eye on the polls to the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC), the administrative body that came into being following the signing of a new Bodo Accord on February 10, 2003. The first election of the BTC is scheduled for May 13.

The convention elected ABSU adviser Rabiram Narzary as president of the new party that initially plans to work in the areas falling under the BTC but aims to expand its influence to the entire State.
