This Day That Age
The Egyptian Prime Minister, Lt.Col. Gamal Abdel Nasser, arrived in New Delhi from Karachi on April 12 by an Air India International Constellation. He was given a rousing reception at the Palam airport by a large gathering, among whom were Prime Minister Nehru, members of the diplomatic corps and senior officials of the Government. Col. Nasser, speaking to pressmen at the airport, said Egypt was against regional defence pacts and believed in complete independence. "We were suffering from domination so long. We do not believe in organising regional pacts and want to complete our revolution." He said he would have talks with Mr. Nehru on strengthening the friendship between India and Egypt. He would also discuss Far Eastern problems with him. When a correspondent asked for his views on the formation of an Islamic bloc, he retorted: "What is an Islamic bloc?"
