BCCI case adjourned

CHENNAI, APRIL 12. A civil court here today adjourned to April 21 further hearing on a contempt of court proceedings initiated by a Chennai-based cricket club against the present and former president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

When the matter came up for hearing before the VI Assistant City Civil Judge, M. Mohaideen Pitchai, this morning the senior counsel for the Sri Theagaraya Recreation Club, Nalini Chidambaram, submitted that the Judge's earlier order directing Jagmohan Dalmiya and Ranbir Singh Mahendra had not been complied with as yet. She insisted on that portion of the order being honoured by the office-bearers.

However, counsel for the BCCI, S. Raghunathan, said the personal appearance of the respondents did not arise at this stage. He also filed the counter-affidavit of Mr. Mahendra, and sought time to file other counters. The Judge then adjourned the matter to April 21.

Meanwhile, Mr. Mahendra filed his counter-affidavit stating that Mr. Dalmiya was a continuing director of the executive body of the International Cricket Council (ICC) representing the BCCI. He said Mr. Dalmiya's presence in the ICC meeting at New Delhi on March 17 and 18 was bonafide one with due authorisation.

He said the petition had been filed with a malicious intention to "defame and ridicule the image, reputation and credibility of the BCCI and its office-bearers." — Our Staff Reporter
