CHANDIGARH, APRIL 12. The Haryana Government has, on the eve of Jallianwala Bagh Day, decided to more than double the pension of freedom fighters, raising it from Rs.1,400 per month to Rs. 3,500 per month with immediate effect. The Chief Minister, Bhupinder Singh Hooda, said that no Indian could pay back for the sacrifices made by the freedom fighters. However, his regime was providing them incentives in recognition of their significant contribution to the freedom struggle. Mr Hooda said it was for the first time after 1998 that an enhancement had been made in the rate of pension for freedom fighters. The then State Government had increased the pension by merely Rs.400 per month in 1998, he added.
