`Utilise State's share of water'

HUBLI April 12. Basavaraj Bommai, MLC, has said that the State should concentrate its energies on harnessing its share of Krishna waters rather than trying to prevent Andhra Pradesh from going ahead with the execution of projects in the Krishna Basin without clearance from the Centre. Reacting to the statement made by the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, here on Monday that an all-party delegation will meet the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, in this connection, Mr. Bommai said on Tuesday that it would be a futile effort. The Centre had many times in the past expressed its helplessness in intervening in the matter and the Supreme Court had said that the dispute should be taken before the tribunal concerned. He said the new tribunal constituted to decide on the sharing of surplus waters among the riparian States will take time to start functioning. It will be too late if Karnataka waits till the tribunal gets its act together. The time has come for the State to take some bold steps to protect its interests and plan for the utilisation of its entire share of water instead of limiting its approach to the allocation under Scheme A of the Bachawat Tribunal award. The State should go ahead and raise the height of the Alamatti dam to 524 metres to store the surplus water.
