Deve Gowda cautions Govt. on land grabbing

By Our Special Correspondent

BANGALORE APRIL 12., The former Prime Minister and Janata Dal (Secular) President, H.D. Deve Gowda, has sounded a note of caution to the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, in the light of the former Minister D.K. Shivakumar, allegedly grabbing prime land forming part of a slum near the Bangalore City Railway Station.

Mr. Deve Gowda after visiting the spot told The Hindu here tonight that he would write to the Chief Minister on Wednesday calling upon him to initiate stern action against land-grabbers. Anti-social elements have been let loose against the slum dwellers at Okalipuram and four acres of prime land has been grabbed in the process. Over 150 houses were reportedly demolished overnight on the instruction of the former Minister, he alleged.

He said the Janata Dal(S) had extended support to the Congress to form the coalition government with the larger aim of serving the poor people. It is unfortunate that a former Minister has grabbed prime land.

Mr. Deve Gowda said he would be happy if the Congress President, Sonia Gandhi, sends a fact-finding team to Bangalore to study this case apart from several other land-grabbing cases in Bangalore in the recent past

Complaint to Governor

The President of the State unit of the Janata Dal (Secular), N. Thippanna, has complained to the Governor, T.N. Chaturvedi, against Mr. Shivakumar. In his letter to the Governor, Mr. Thippanna said that a company owned by Mr. Shivakumar is using anti-social elements to threaten slum dwellers who have been residing on land allotted to them by the Karnataka Slum Clearance Board. The slum dwellers have complained to the police and have also brought the matter to the notice of the Commissioner of Police.
