Houses for all tsunami-hit fisherfolk soon: Rangasamy

By Our Staff Reporter

PONDICHERRY, APRIL 12. The Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, told T. Jayamoorthy (Independent) in the Assembly today that fishermen who had lost their houses in the December 26 tsunami in Pondicherry and Karaikal would soon be provided housing.

He was replying to Mr. Jayamoorthy who wanted to know what steps had been taken to provide housing for the affected families.

Mr. Rangasamy said the Government was going ahead with the housing scheme and no section of the affected families would be left out.

The Chief Minister told the House that the scheme of self-assessment of property tax adopted by the Municipalities and the panchayats to finalise the house and property tax had been welcomed. There would not be any imbalance between the affluent sections and others as alleged by A. Kasilingam (All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam), while tabling the main question in this regard.

Mr. Kasilingam however insisted that some owners of multi-storied buildings were being levied lesser taxes while those in the middle-income brackets were levied higher taxes. He had received many complaints and hence the Government should ensure that there was an equitable application of the norms.

Sodium vapour lights

Mr. Rangasamy told S. P. Sivakumar (Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam), that all the streets within the boulevard limits in Pondicherry would be provided with sodium vapour light posts. A master plan on this was now being finalised. About 370 such streetlights would be installed by the year-end. The main highways including the East Coast Road would also have sodium vapour light posts. The Agriculture Minister, A. Namassivayam, would consider a proposal to set up a Welfare Board for farmers, although such a scheme had not been included in the Tenth plan of the Department of Agriculture.
