CHENNAI, APRIL 12 . The State Government today signed a memorandum of understanding with the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) for setting up an export promotion zone (EPZ) for cashew at Cuddalore. The Rs. 1036-crore EPZ will enhance export to Rs.100 crores in three years and to provide employment to 25, 000 persons, says an official release. The Secretary, Agriculture, P. Baskaradoss, and the APEDA Deputy General Manager, Harpal Singh, signed the agreement at the Secretariat in the presence on Chief Minister Jayalalithaa. The State Government would set up the zone in association with the APEDA, the Ministry of Food processing, the National Horticulture Board and the private sector. It would boasts of extension activities, technology upgrade, processing units, laboratory and cold storage facilities. It would promote the economy of farmers in Cuddalore, Thanjavur, Pudukottai and Sivaganga districts and help in using the cashew processing units to their full capacity. India is the largest exporter of cashew nut. In Tamil Nadu, cashew is cultivated on 95, 500 hectares and 40, 000 tonnes of nut is produced.
