Indians struggle to make an impact

CHANGWON (KOREA), APRIL 12. The Indian shooters struggled to make an impact in the ongoing shooting World Cup, as Olympians Mansher Singh and Manavjit Singh Sandhu shot 115 out of 125 and finished 13th and 15th respectively in the trap event.

In an event in which Giovanni Pellielo of Italy took the gold and the Olympic quota place for Beijing 2008 with a world record 144, two points ahead of two-time Olympic champion Michael Diamond of Australia, Mansher had a sequence of 23, 25, 22, 21 and 24. Manavjit's sequence read 22, 24, 24, 23 and 22 and he finished behind Mansher on the basis of the last card.

Zoravar started well but could not sustain his good work as he returned a series of 24, 22, 23, 23 and 22.

The Chinese continued to excel as Tan Zongliang won the air pistol gold and with it the Olympic quota place. He was the second Chinese to book a berth for the next Olympics behind Zhao Yinghui, who took the women's air rifle quota.

Indians Samresh Jung (577), Ronak Pandit (574) and Vivek Singh (572) took the 22nd, 27th and 32nd positions in a field of 54. Samresh was on course for a berth in the final as he shot scores of 97, 99, 97 and 97 but below par rounds of 93 and 94 pulled him down.

Indian marksmen Surendra Singh Rathod (589) and Sushil Ghalay (588) fought gallantly for a place in the final, but lacked the required high level of accuracy. Ghalay in particular made up after a bad start with a spectacular series of 96, 97, 98, 100, 97 and 100, and missed the final by four points.

The results:

Men: 10m air pistol: 1. Tan Zongliang (Chn) 689.1 (586); 2. Vladimir Isakov (Rus) 685.6 (585); 3. Ivan Rybovalov (Ukr) 685.4 (584); 22. Samresh Jung 577; 27. Ronak Pandit 574; 32. Vivek Singh 572.
