It's Tamil Nadu vs Uttar Pradesh

By Our Special Correspondent

MUMBAI, APRIL 12. Tamil Nadu secured a 27-run victory against Bengal in the semifinals of the BCCI all-India knockout tournament at the Brabourne Stadium here on Tuesday. It will meet Uttar Pradesh, which upset last year's winner, Mumbai.

Tamil Nadu had quite a few contributors, but the leading performers were left handed opener S. Vidyut, who cracked a fine century, and left arm spinner S. Sriram, who tricked three batsmen in a row in his five-wicket haul.

Vidyut's enterprising 120-ball 123 was laced with 13 fours. His opening partner, S. Suresh, got out at the team score of 25 and Sriram at 81. Thereafter he found an admirable ally in captain Hemang Badani (54, 65b, 4x4) to shore up the Tamil Nadu innings. This pair added 103 runs off 20 overs.

On an excellent batting pitch, the Bengal seamers — Shib Shankar Paul and Ranadeb Bose — were firmly driven. Apart from off break bowler Sourashish Lahiri none of the other seven bowlers used by captain Devang Gandhi posed a threat to the settled third wicket pair.

As usual R. Jesuraj provided the breakthrough removing Sanjib Sanyal in his first over. Bengal lost wickets at regular intervals, and it was not before the sixth wicket pair in S. Das and D. Dasgupta settled down to offer resistance, that Bengal came close to compete as a rival.

Sriram's hat-trick

Jesuraj returned for second spell to break this partnership after which Sriram dismissed Shib Sagar, Manoj Tewari and R. Bose on the 4th, 5th and 6th balls of his 10th over.

In the second semifinal, Suresh Raina's all-round display took Uttar Pradesh past Mumbai at the Wankhede Stadium. Raina captured four wickets, but more importantly he anchored the UP innings with a remarkable unbeaten 72 off 82 balls with four boundary hits.
