HYDERABAD, APRIL 12. Out of turn promotions are likely for Indian cricket captain Mithali Raj and off-spinner Nooshin Al Khadeer, both of whom figured prominently in the World Cup for women that concluded in South Africa last week. Raj had cracked an unbeaten 91 against New Zealand in the semifinals and Al Khadeer had claimed three wickets, including that of rival skipper Maia Lewis, both performances proving pivotal for the Indian team's entry into the final. Both are employed in the engineering department of South Central Railway, where Mithali is an Office Superintendent, Grade II and Al Khadeer, a Group C senior clerk. Raj with a knock of 214 in 2002 holds the world batting record in Tests, an achievement that fetched her a double promotion from senior clerk to her present post. With 56 one-day internationals and four Tests behind her, Mithali was conferred with the Railway Minister's and Arjuna Awards in 2003-04. Al-Khadeer represented the country in 34 one-dayers and a Test since her appointment as Senior Clerk in February 2003. She was recipient of the General Manager's Award for excellence in sports and the Divisional Railway Manager's (DRM) Award as well. As per the regular norms of the Railway Sports Promotion Board, the Delhi based apex body will consider elevation of these two players in recognition of their international achievement.
