GSK expands clinical data operations

By Our Special Correspondent

BANGALORE, APRIL 12. GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals is expanding its clinical trial data management, analyses and reporting activities in India where it plans to double the headcount depending on business needs.

S. Kalyanasundaram, Managing Director of GSK India, and Vice-President, South Asia, GSK International, told reporters that the activities being conducted by the clinical data management centre, India (CDMCI), and biomedical data sciences India (BDSI), both located here, were poised for expansion.

GSK India's clinical data management and analysis operations in the city, working on global development projects having a staff of 64, moved into a new facility with a capacity to accommodate around 120 people. The headcount would be scaled up to the optimum level depending on the needs of GSK Worldwide and India, Kwasi Amfo, Head, CDMCI said.

The activities in Bangalore began in 1996 as a centre for data entry for the company's global clinical activities, and now caters to the data services for global clinical trials conducted by GSK.

Penny Clarke, who is in-charge of the BDSI Group, said BDSI was one of the seven statistical and programming units of GSK worldwide.

Mr. Kalyanasundaram said the company was keen on forging a partnership with the Government. India can play a much larger role for clinical research/manufacturing given proper economic climate and policy framework," he added.
