By Our Staff Reporter

PATHANAMTHITTA, APRIL 12. The Bharath Agro Processing and Marketing Co-operative (BAMCO) Limited launched its district-level rubber procurement programme here today.

The former Union Minister, O. Rajagopal, inaugurated the BAMCO venture at a function at the YMCA Hall here this afternoon.

The BAMCO president, K.V. Sreedharan Master, presided over the function. Addressing the meeting, the BAMCO vice-president, P.J. Thomas, said that the organisation would directly procure various agriculture products from farmers. This would help them get maximum benefit in the changed economic scenario. According to him, the BAMCO would procure rubber and other agriculture produces at a price higher than the prevailing market price.

He said that the main objective of the BAMCO was to establish, promote, maintain and manage the business relating to process, manufacture, purchase, sale, finance and export of all kinds of agriculture commodities and by-products.

He said that the BAMCO had been organising and promoting self-help groups through out the State aimed at empowering women. Mushroom culture, mini-dairy farms, horticulture (group farming), insurance and marketing of bamboo products were the thrust areas, he added.

He said that the BAMCO would soon appoint agencies for marketing bamboo products in major cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata and Bangalore.

He said that the BAMCO would open 10 more centres in the district before April 20. The proposed centres are at Ranni, Vechoochira, Konni, Mallappally, Kottayam, Kalanjoor, Vadasserikkara, Athikkayam, Kunnamthanam and Kizhakkumpuram.
