Rs.30-crore drinking water project for Alapad

By Our Staff Reporter

KOLLAM, APRIL 12. The Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, has said that a Rs. 30-crore drinking water project will be implemented in the tsunami-devastated Alapad panchayat. He made the announcement after laying the foundation stone for a bridge to link Azheekal with Ayiramthengu today.

Mr. Chandy said that the tsunami-hit panchayats of Alapad, Aratupuzha and Edavanakad would soon be protected by seawall. Directives for constructing the seawall had already been issued, he said.

The Chief Minister said that there was no financial problem for the rehabilitation programme at Alapad. The Government was receiving overwhelming support from various voluntary organisations for the purpose.

The delay in giving green signal for the construction of houses at Alapad was only technical.

The other two tsunami-hit areas in the State had no such problems and hence the construction of houses there could be taken up earlier.

Collector lauded

He called upon all concerned to clear misunderstandings. The Government was prepared to give a patient hearing to any complaints and rectify it, if any. He stressed on teamwork and cooperation for the early completion of the rehabilitation programme. The Chief Minister used the opportunity to laud the Kollam Collector, B. Sreenivas, for the untiring manner in which he led the tsunami rescue, relief and rehabilitation work at Alapad.

Presiding over the function, the Minister for Public Works, M.K. Muneer, said that the formal agreement to complete the construction of the bridge is 18 months.

But the Government is hopeful that the bridge would be completed in 10 months.

The Labour Minister, Babu Divakaran, and the Fisheries Minister, Dominic Presentation, also spoke.
