THRISSUR, APRIL 12. The leaders of the Kerala Vyapari Vyavasayi Ekopana Samithi (KVVES) have said that they will take action against those shop-owners who are found to be collecting Value Added Tax (VAT) on items which are not under the tax regime. Addressing a press conference here today, the Samithi leaders claimed that as a result of the agreement they had entered with the Government to end their recent agitation the traders who were not being subjected to sales tax till March 31 last will not come under the purview of VAT also. According to them nearly nine lakh small-scale shops have been exempted from the purview of the VAT as a result of this. Those shops will not have to take registration under the VAT and will not have to collect that tax. Asked about the reported statement of the Finance Minister, Vakkom Purushothaman, that the Government had not entered into such an agreement with the traders, the Samithi leaders said they hoped the Government will abide by the agreement as the Congress leader, M. M. Hassan, has negotiated with them to end the stir on behalf of the UDF regime.
