By Our Staff Reporter

ARATTUPUZHA, APRIL 12. The delay in construction of houses in the tsunami-hit panchayats of Alappad and Arattupuzha in the State was because of the extra precautions being taken by the State Government to identify land and technology to be used in the construction of houses which could withstand natural calamities, the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, has said.

He was addressing a public meeting after laying the foundation stone of the bridge across the Kayamkulam Lake connecting the tsunami- hit Arattupuzha panchayat with Kochiyude jetty in the mainland.

Mr. Chandy said the Government had identified land in Arattupuzha panchayat where 765 houses would be built for the tsunami-affected. The Chief Minister said the land had already been handed over to various agencies that had been entrusted with task of construction of houses.

The Chief Minister said the construction of 14 houses for the tsunami-affected in Edavanakkad panchayat in Ernakulam district has been completed. The houses were built by Amrithanandamayi Math. Mr. Chandy said the houses would be handed over to the tsunami-affected on April 14.

List finalised

The Chief Minister said the Government had finalised the list of fishermen who lost fishing implements in the tsunami. Mr. Chandy added that the Government would soon distribute compensation to all eligible fishermen.

The Public Works Minister, M. K. Muneer, who presided over the function said the bridge would be completed in 11 months.

He said the PWD has been asked to repair the roads of Arattupuzha which had been damaged in the tsunami. The Tourism Minster, K. C. Venugopal, offered felicitations.

Those who spoke at the function included the local MLA, T. K. Devakumar, and the Alappuzha district panchayat president, K. H. Babujan.
