U.P. cops gear up to tackle naxal menace

LUCKNOW, APRIL 12. Uttar Pradesh police has braced itself to effectively tackle the growing naxal menace along its borders with Madhya Pradesh.

State Principal Secretary (Home) Alok Sinha said as part of a drive to improve combativeness and preparedness of U.P. police in countering naxalites, security personnel would be armed with the latest weapons and equipment.

The police has been provided with 36 night vision devices and as many binoculars. Each police station in the naxalite infested areas would be provided with two `commando lights'.

Police in the three naxalite infested districts of Sonebhadra, Mirzapur and Chandauli have also been provided with bullet-proof vests and two Improvised Explosive Device (IED) jammers each.

While Sonebhadra has been given 220 jackets, Mirzapur and Chandauli were provided with 130 and 85 jackets respectively.

UP will buy bullet-proof helmets worth Rs 1.18 crores, Mr Sinha added. -- UNI
