Rs. 1,000 crores sought to digitalise survey records

By Our Staff Correspondent

BELLARY, APRIL 12. The State Government has forwarded a proposal to the Planning Commission seeking financial assistance of Rs. 1,000 crores to computerise land survey records.

Responding to questions from presspersons here on Monday, the Minister for Revenue, M.P. Prakash, said that land records, maps and other details with the Survey department are in a bad condition and need to be computerised or they will be lost forever.

The Government has decided to take up the project across the State, and to start with, it is being implemented on a pilot basis in Bailhongal taluk in Belgaum district and Malavalli taluk in Mandya district.

The Government has already spent Rs. 39 lakhs on the project so far. The Government will extend the programme to all taluks for which around Rs. 1,000 crores is required.

Market intervention

Referring to the plight of chilli growers in the wake of the drop in the price of the commodity, Mr. Prakash said that he and other elected representatives in the district will meet the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, and the Agriculture Minister, K. Srinivasa Gowda, and urge the Government to enter the market and release funds from the corpus fund to ensure a minimum support price for the commodity.

Cropping pattern

Mr. Prakash said that the Government is keen to safeguard the interests of farmers. At the same time, he expects farmers to follow the recommendations of the Agriculture Department on cropping pattern.

He appealed to farmers not to violate the cropping pattern and avoid taking up the cultivation of paddy in the command areas.

He said that the Government has allocated more funds for irrigation in this year's budget and work on constructing balancing reservoirs in the Tungabhadra command area in Bellary district will be taken up in in the next few months.

Regarding the Singatalur Lift Irrigation Project (SLIP), he said that work on the first phase is in progress and the Karnataka Neeravari Nigam has allocated Rs. 55 crores to the project.

He added that compensation will be released soon to those who lost their lands to the project.

Drinking water

Mr. Prakash said that he has given the Bellary Divisional Controller of the Road Transport Corporation six months to take steps to ensure that the organisation starts earning profits.

He said that Rs. 19 crores has been released to Bellary district under the Swajaladhara scheme and made it clear that there will be no paucity of funds for taking up drinking water schemes. He added that water will be supplied through tankers to villages facing water scarcity.

The Minister said that the proposed Rs. 33-crore drinking water scheme for Hagari Bommanahalli, Kottur and Kudligi is being revised to ensure that drinking water can be supplied to all the villages around the towns.

The Kurgodu MLA, N. Suryanarayan Reddy, was present.
