Former weightlifting champion dead

TIRUR APRIL 12. M.K. Jose, former national body building and weight lifting champion, died here this evening following a cardiac arrest.

He fell into the Tirur river. Jose, 53, was the only body builder in the State to have received an accreditation of the National Institute of Sports (NIS).

He was working as manager of the Syndicate Bank here.

According to his friends, Jose had suffered a heart attack about a week ago.

Witnesses said that Jose had a cardiac arrest while leaving the office for home today. On feeling uneasy, Jose sat at the jetty on the Bypass Road but fell into the river.

Though he was rushed to the hospital, he died on the way.

Jose, who hails from Thiruvambadi in Thrissur, is survived by his wife and two children.

Jose's death has come as a shock to the body building fraternity in the country.

A former associate secretary of the Indian Body Building Federation, Jose was regarded as a pioneer of body building in Kerala.

He had been the State champion for several years during the early 70s. He had bagged the national championship more than once.

Puppetry workshop

Thrissur April 12. The Rangachethana will hold a three-day workshop on puppetry here from April 15. The workshop will be inaugurated by the secretary of the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi, Sreemoolanagaram Mohan. Among those who will take part in the workshop are Venuji, Vayala Vasudevan Pillai, Ramachandran Pulavar and T. P. Kunjiraman, says a press release.

Murder: one held

KOTTAYAM April 12. The police have taken one person into custody in connection with the murder of a housewife near here on Sunday. Sivan (18), a household labourer, has been taken into custody by the police in connection with the murder of Jessi (30) wife of Biju of Peedikaparambil, Kallara. He is a native of Tamil Nadu. The housewife was found brutally murdered on Sunday presumably before her one-and-a-half year old son.

Face-to-face

KASARAGOD APIRL 12. As part of the Governments' new administrative initiatives, the District Collector and the Superintendent of Police here will hold face-to-face programmes in May. The first one in the series will be held at Kasaragod on May 1 and the second one in Hosdurg on May 8. Complaints/grievances regarding the performance and behaviour of officials may be sent to the District Collector so as to reach the Collectorate latest by April 20.

Official held on charges of graft

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM APRIL 12. The Vigilance & Anti-Corruption Bureau today arrested K. V. Mohanan, district officer in the Groundwater Department, Kozhikode, when he allegedly accepted a bribe of Rs.4,000 from a borewell contractor. An official here said a team led by the Kozhikode, Dy.SP, Baby Thomas, trapped the accused when he accepted the money in marked notes at his office at around 6 p.m. The accused was later remanded in custody.

Telecom tariff package

The BSNL Kerala Telecom Circle will introduce a new alternate tariff package for its urban landline customers from May 1. As many as 100 free calls a month is being offered for a rental of Rs.240. The remaining calls will be charged at Rs.1.20 a pulse. The package is available in urban areas of SDCAs where the present capacity is more than one lakh lines. The plan is applicable for new customers as well as for existing connections. Existing customers can exercise their option at the nearest BSNL customer service centre by giving a written request for availing themselves of the package from the next billing cycle.

New branch opened

The second branch of the ICICI bank in the city was opened at Pazhaya road, near G.G. Hospital, today by K. Mohan Das, director, Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute of Medical Sciences and Technology. N. Jayaram, regional manager-branch banking and Neelkant Pillai, branch manager attended the function.

SHRC to visit steel firm

PALAKKAD APRIL 12. The Kerala State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) will visit Paragon Steels Private Limited (Unit II) at Kanjikode on Wednesday to look into the allegations of pollution from its the steel- smelting unit. The Commission chairman, Justice V.P. Mohan Kumar, will visit the plant to make an inquiry into the complaints. The Janakeeya Samithi formed by workers of a neighbouring industrial unit and local people had complained to the Commission that waste from the unit was leading to environmental problems.

Poonthanam award for Malliyur

THRISSUR APRIL 12. Malliyur Sankaran Namboodiri has been selected for this year's Poonthanam Award for his contributions to the field of Sapthaham religious discourses, based on Bhagavatham and Narayaneeyam. The award, carrying a gold medal, citation, ponnada and sculpture, instituted by the Sree Guruvayurappa Bhaktha Samithi, will be presented at a function at Malliyur in Kottayam in the first week of May.

Meet on ward delimitation

KOZHIKODE APRIL 12. A grama panchayat that has a population of 15,000 will have 12 wards when delimitation of wards is carried out. This was stated at a training programme for secretaries for grama panchayat held at the Collectorate Conference hall. However, the number of wards in a grama panchayat may be as high as 22 if it has a higher population. While for a population of 15,000 there could be 12 wards, for every additional population of 2,500, one more ward could be sanctioned. But the maximum number of wards in a grama panchayat should not be more than 22.

Kidney transplant case

The Judicial First Class Magistrate VI here has directed that the inquiry report submitted by the former Director General of Police (Central Zone), Mohammed Yasin, on the kidney transplant case involving a private hospital here be made public. The order came in a defamation case filed by a private hospital. Mr. Yasin had conducted an inquiry into the alleged sale of kidney involving tribals of Attappadi by two private hospitals. The Government counsel had argued that the inquiry report should not to be made public. The Judge, Ananthakrishna Navada, expressed the view that the report if made public would not affect the State or harm the public.

Traders' meet

KOLLAM April 12. An emergency meeting of the Kollam district unit of the Kerala Vyapari Vyavasayi Ekopana Samithy (KVVES) will be held at the Merchants Chamber Hall at 2.30 p.m. on April 16. The president of the samithy, A. Abdul Rahim, will preside. The general secretary, G. Gopakumar, has requested the attendance of all members for the meeting.

Office-bearers

K. Radhakrishnan and Edwin Calistus were elected chairman and secretary respectively of the district unit of the KSEB Engineers Association. The other office-bearers are C. Madhusoodanan Pillai, vice-chairman and D. Rajkumar, treasurer.

They were elected at the district general body meeting of the association held here on Monday.
