CHENNAI, APRIL 12. The two metro rail projects planned in the city will cover a distance of 45 km in the first phase. A spokesperson of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), which had earlier prepared a preliminary report for the metro in Chennai, said at present levels the cost of construction for an elevated section is between Rs. 110 crores and Rs. 130 crores per km. For the underground section the cost will be Rs. 270 crores per km. This is the cost for a high-capacity metro system like the Delhi Metro which carries between 60,000 and 80,000 passengers per hour in a given direction. All the costs of the Metro system are "finished costs'' which include infrastructure, systems and rolling stock.
