CHENNAI, APRIL 12 . The State Government today signed a memorandum of understanding with the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) for setting up an export promotion zone (EPZ) for cashew at Cuddalore. The Rs. 10.36-crore EPZ will enhance export to Rs. 100 crores in three years and provide employment to 25, 000 persons, says an official release. The State Government will set up the zone in association with the APEDA, the Ministry of Food processing, the National Horticulture Board and the private sector. Extension activities, technology upgrading, processing units, laboratory and cold storage facilities will be made available. The EPZ will promote the economy of farmers in Cuddalore, Thanjavur, Pudukottai and Sivaganga districts, besides facilitating the utilisation of cashew processing units to full capacity and enhancing job opportunities in the State. The Secretary, Agriculture, P. Baskaradoss, and the APEDA Deputy General Manager, Harpal Singh, signed the agreement at the Secretariat in the presence of Chief Minister Jayalalithaa.
