CHENNAI, APRIL 12. Sixteen post offices across the State will get new buildings at a cost of Rs.10 crores. The projects, including a new building to house the General Post Office in Chennai at Rs. 3.70 crores, have been approved by the Department of Posts. The Tamil Nadu Postal Circle expects the money to be sanctioned in phases over two years, Vatsala Raghu, Chief Postmaster-General, told presspersons here today. In Chennai, the post offices in Flower Bazaar, Mandaveli, MKB Nagar in Vyasarpadi, Anna Nagar Western Extension, Kilpauk and Manali would get new buildings. A new building for the GPO was necessitated because of a fire in October 2000. In other places, the existing structures were in a dilapidated state or the post offices were functioning from rented premises. Other Post offices to get new buildings include the head POs in Aruppukottai, Tuticorin and Karaikudi and other grade POs in Athur, Krishnagiri, Sevapet, Gingee towns and Mangalam and Pulliyampatti villages. In some of the locations, the new buildings would come up on vacant land. Noting that the work at the GPO would commence shortly, Ms. Raghu said the dismantling of the structure ravaged in fire had been completed. The facade of the old structure would, however, be retained in view of their heritage value. The new buildings would have lifts for the benefit of the aged. Finance Marts selling various financial products were planned at the Kilpauk and Flower Bazaar post offices. In Kilpauk, the construction on six grounds would be taken in two phases.
