Udupi
By Our Staff Correspondent
UDUPI, APRIL 12. Dakshina Kannada Mogaveera Mahajana Sangha, the apex body of the Mogaveera (fishermen) community in Udupi and Dakshina districts, has opposed the setting up of a coal-based power project by Nagarjuna Power Corporation Ltd. (NPCL) at Yellur near Padubidri. In a press release issued here on Tuesday, the sangha said the decision to oppose the project was taken at a meeting held at Uchila here recently. Representatives of the Nandikur Janajagriti Samiti, Hejamady-Yellur Mogaveera Samyukta Sabha, Kadipatna- Nadipatna Mogaveera Samyukta Sabha and Kaup Nalku Patna Mogaveera Samyukta Sabha attended the meeting along with Manorama Madhwaraj, MP, and Lalaji Mendan, MLA. It was decided to oppose the construction of the coal-based thermal power project. The fishermen community has always been in the forefront of opposing power projects that spoil the environs, the sangha said. The sangha supports the Nandikur Janajagriti Samiti, which is fighting against the establishment of the power project, it added. The sangha criticised the alleged high-handed manner in which the project is being forced on the people of the region. It urged the Government to stop sudden surveys and other activities in favour of the power project in the region. The sangha is not opposed to the setting up of a gas-based power project, it said.
